NAME

helena - a fast API client you can keep in git

DESCRIPTION

Helena does what you expect from an API client: it sends requests, scripts tests and runs whole collections. It is a single native app built with Go and Fyne, opens quickly, and needs no browser engine, account or cloud service.

Collections, folders and requests are plain YAML files, so they can live in the same repository as the API they test. Secrets are kept out of them. Version 0.9 added auth that folders and collections pass down to their requests.

FEATURES

--native
A desktop app built with Fyne, about 35 MB, that starts right away. No Electron.
collections.yaml
Collections, folders and requests are plain YAML you can review and version. Secrets stay out of them.
--auth
Nine schemes: Basic, Bearer, API Key, OAuth 2.0 with PKCE, OAuth 1.0a, WSSE, AWS SigV4, Digest and NTLM, set per request or inherited from a folder or collection.
--stream
Server-Sent Events and two-way WebSocket sessions, built on the standard library.
{{var}}
A layered variable scope across URL, query, headers and body, with a live preview of the resolved URL.
--script
Pre- and post-request JavaScript with a helena.* API, test() and expect(), and a no-code Assertions tab.
helena run
Chain requests and pass results forward, and run whole collections in CI from the command line.
--import / --export
Imports OpenAPI (up to 3.2), Swagger, WSDL and Postman. Exports to cURL, wget, fetch, Python and Go.
--viewer
A virtualized JSON viewer for big responses: collapsible nodes, highlighting, find-in-response and soft wrap.
go test
The runtime is plain, testable Go, covered by go test and checked with govulncheck.
